Southern homes are filled with many decorative items to accent every room in the home. From placemats to flowerpots, the easy beauty touches the heart of the house owner.

Southern homes often have decorative vases of blooming flowers filling the house and outdoor gardens decorated with green plants and blooming trees. It’s no surprise that this blue floral teacup planter is really a decor best seller inside my Southern Home Place as it represents the southern home very well.

The blue floral teacup planter looks like a bit of fine china, right down to the ladylike floral pattern. Just add you favorite plant and revel in watching it grow down the sides towards the saucer below. The drain hole in the bottom keeps the plant healthy because it is regularly nourished with water.

Low Country Style

Low country style homes originated in the South and are common around the Charleston area of South Carolina. Low country cottages are simply that–white siding covered cottages that usually hover on the edge of the marsh. Sometimes known as “cracker style,” these homes evoke an informal, perpetual summer style perfect for relaxed decorating. Paint the cottage interior in soft, pastel shades, almost frozen treats shades. Add wood floors for easy clean up and long wear. Cover sofas and loveseats with cotton slipcovers in white cotton or denim for an informal look. Add seashell accents throughout the home with candles, netting as well as on tabletops. Lighthouse accents add a nautical look for homes near the shore. Look for old antique, distressed dining tables, and add mismatched wooden chairs. With porches surrounding most sides of the low country cottage it seems sensible to add rocking chairs and porch swings to consider advantage of the breeze. Add soft pillows towards the chairs for comfort. Potted geraniums give a splash of color for a porch. Basic window coverings would be best; look for simple roller shades, bamboo shades or plain cotton curtains.

furniture styles and can include natural furnishings like wicker and baskets. Range from the use of family heirloom furniture, antiques and artifacts gathered from world travels. Most plantation homes feature an upstairs along with a downstairs, with vast pillars right in front of the home. Many times, there is an expansive porch all over the house and a large balcony above. Add white wicker furniture to porches for lots of seating. Windows are often left open to allow for natural air conditioning. Cover windows with heavy drapes or curtains, but make sure they can be moved aside within the traditional fashion. Opt to result in the dining room a focal area of the home for decorating, give a large wood dining table with matching chairs and a sideboard. A chandelier is a must, along with silver, china and table linens. Give a bowl of fresh camellias together with candles for a beautiful centerpiece.

Spanish Style

Spanish style homes are prominent in the South, mainly in southern Florida. With stuccoed walls and terra-cotta colors, Spanish style is informal and incredibly welcoming. This style of home is often referred to as Spanish colonial revival and began in California, making its way to Florida. Arched doorways and entryways lend a softness towards the design, while tiled roofs add substance. Paint walls an ordinary white and accent with dark wood trim. Use colors from nature for example green, red and fuschia with discretion on the cool, white interior. Add wrought iron pieces for example candlesticks and add large pillar candles. Heavy, leather furniture is effective in the Spanish style. Match dark, wood tables for any substantial look. Use large rugs over terra-cotta tiled floors for a soft feel underfoot. Add tropical plants like ficus and aloe to clay pots and distribute within a room.
